If you have played Archibald’s Adventure and liked it then I’d like to introduce you to Jack or 100 Ways to Barbeque. Jack BBQ is your basic run & jump game. You control Jack, who is a brave guy with an awesome hat! Each level is basically a large maze with multiple rooms. Controls are simple and as you can tell by the screenshots you are given a d-pad and two buttons, sort of like the old NES controllers. Gameplay itself is easy, just run around collecting coins and keys and even gems. Avoid monsters and don’t fall into the fire in an attempt to eventually find the exit and move to the next level. As you traverse through the multiple rooms you will come across moving floors, brown ropes you can climb up and down on, silver ropes which you can only slide down, ladders and colored doors. The colored doors require a same color key to be opened. After finding all the keys and collecting as many coins and gems as possible you will eventually find the exit and move onto the next level.

Jack BBQ is a pretty fun game, but with every review I do, I have to find something to complain about right? My largest complaint is simply the controls. The D-pad is nice and works well, but my issue is with the buttons. The red and blue buttons on the right side seem to be a tad small, and as I’m playing I tend to miss them more frequently then I would like. Maybe a swift update to increase the button size would easily fix the problem. Or it is possible that I am the only one with this problem, I do tend to have my idiot moments. Other than that the game is nice. Old-school graphics are something I am fond of, and I still like the run & jump type games. Controls can be a bit hard to get used to at first, and a lot of times you will swear you hit the jump button but Jack won’t jump. Whether it’s a problem with the game, or simply missing the button is to be determined.

QUICK TAKE

Value: Medium

Would I Buy Again: Yes

Learning Curve: Medium

Who is it For: Everyone! It’s a game!

My Likes: It’s challenging, but not to the point it makes you want to give up.

My Dislikes: Controls seems a bit unresponsive at points, button sizes.

Final Statement: Jack BBQ is a very fun game. I anticipate more levels with future updates (hopefully) and am crossing my fingers that they will increase the button sizes for me as well. Jack BBQ even has a sort of Indiana Jones feel to it, without the huge boulder.

Rating: 3 ½ stars
