Lost in Cube features a rotund game character named Qubby. The backstory concerns Qubby lost in the vast expanse of outer space. How he got lost, you don’t know for sure, but he hopes you could aid him in navigating the many space cubes he happens to get himself further lost in. The developer of Lost in Cube hopes, too, that you have fun while you’re at it, and it’s highly likely that you will.

Lost in Cube is a clever combination of a maze and an arcade game. The maze part comes into play by virtue of the game’s very setting, as suggested by the geometric figure in its name. Each of the 24 levels takes place in a cube, its size getting slightly bigger for every six levels. With the cube’s front side as the level’s starting point, you must guide Qubby to and from the yellow portals found in the cube, taking him from one side of the cube to another, until you find the purple portal located on the posterior side of the cube, which is your only way out of the cube. These portals are initially absent, though. The yellow inter-side portals are activated/deactivated when Qubby bumps into any of the special yellow switches, while the purple exit portal is activated/deactivated when he bumps into the purple switch. To make things a bit more interesting, the purple switch is initially hidden by some sort of a round alien creature, whom you should hit repeatedly until it’s destroyed.

It’s actually advisable for Qubby to bump into many things in order to complete a level and be a top player. While you must always keep in mind that you must be able to get Qubby out of the cube before the time (set at a few minutes at the beginning of a level) runs out, it’s also important that you accumulate a significant amount of points. This is where the arcade factor of Lost in Cube comes in. For you to score points, you have to explore ideally all the six sides of the cube and be able to collect gems, bump into meteoroids, or both. Actually, similar to hitting an alien repeatedly to reveal the purple rock, hitting a meteoroid repeatedly also results in the meteoroid being destroyed and yielding a gem for you to collect. The more hits you make and the more gems you gather, the more points you get. And the more points you get, the closer you are to graduating from the cube with a sparkling gold achievement, rather than just gold, silver, or bronze.

Now that the mechanics of the game are out of the way, you might be wondering about the controls you need to master in helping Qubby find his way in and around a cube. Fret not, for there are only three easy ways to control Qubby: slide your finger on the screen to make him move, swipe to hurl him in a specific direction, and tap to make him stop. Lost in Cube is obviously a game that’s heavily invested in movements, and to its advantage Lost in Cube, in addition to having colorful and retina display-ready graphics, renders movements in an intensively physics-based fashion. You won’t encounter any awkward jerks or hints of unresponsiveness while playing the game and seeing Qubby bounce off objects and cube walls. The actions and their corresponding reactions are as smooth as you’d expect them to be, contributing greatly to the game’s replayability.

Quick Take

Value:High

Would I Buy Again:Yes

Learning Curve:A little steep, but there's a Training Cube to help you get the hang of the game

Who Is It For:Fans of puzzles and arcade games

What I Like:The maze component of the game. The sparkling, physics-based graphics.

What I Don't Like:Swiping from the top of the screen to control Qubby sometimes pulls down the Notification curtain. No sound effects, although there is some energetic background music.

Final Statement:Getting lost in an outer-space maze of fun is easy with Lost in Cube.
