I’m not a doctor, nor do I play one on tv.  But I do find the human body and all it’s structure to be an amazing machine.  I loved the Bodies exhibit as well as Da Vinci’s drawings of the human body.

And in that vein, today I stumbled across an interesting app –3D4Medical’s Head and Neck Muscle System.  It’s a free app that allows you to explore the muscle and bone structure of, you guessed it, the human head and neck. The images are a computer mockup of a human body displaying the various muscles (and associated structures).

The user interface is fairly straight forward.  The ‘views’ button
displays the various views of the current image– Lateral, Posterior, and Anterior.  Strangely, it only shows the left side of the head and not the right side.

The ‘index’ button lets you pick which item you were interested in.  For example, you may be wondering where the Alar nasalis is, so by choosing it in the index, the app will show you exactly where it is—it’s your right nostril.

Want to practice learning all of the names for the various parts?  Take a test, just use the ‘quiz’ button.

If you press the floating knife, you go down one layer of muscles. This took a little getting used to since I wanted to move the knife to where I wanted to cut.  To go back “up” a layer, you need to press the “back” button.

In an effort to make it more ‘iphone-ish’ (I guess) you can also swipe your finger across the screen to see the other views.

There is a pan/zoom feature but it only zooms in a set amount and allows you to pan.  It’d be nice if I could pinch and spread movements to zoom in and out of the head like you do with the Photos on the iphone.

Quick Take

Value:Low -- but primarily because I'm not a doctor

Would I Buy Again:Doubt it

Learning Curve:Not much

Who Is It For:It seems great for people studying biology and doctors. But only a passing interest in arm chair biologists like myself

What I Like:Great images, fun to play with

What I Don't Like:The response time was slow; it would be better if the images would rotate in 3d rather than flipping to see different views

Final Statement:This is an interesting app and a great study aide for biology and medical students
