User Rating:One of the great things about the iPhone is its ability to recreate classic video games. It gives any child of the arcade the opportunity to play those fabled games of their youth without having to bug their parents for quarters or fumble with rag bills in a token machine.
"Paperboy" was a big part of my early video game diet. It didn’t have the usual shoot’em up mentality of most video games and was one of the first to take place in a familiar suburban setting while turning this seemingly typical neighborhood into a block of out-of-control RC cars, cat burglars and breakdancing idiots. The "Classic" version of the game not only faithfully recreates the arcade and home console classic, but adds a few more tweaks to give the game more mileage.
The most noticeable feature of the game is how it close it resembles the original arcade game. Sure it doesn’t come with a handlebar joystick the way the original arcade machine did back when I played it at my local Showbiz Pizza, but this version also talks the way the original game did with that primitive digitized voice and features the same music from the arcade classic. The controls feel different but the learning curve is easier than learning how to ride a bike and they eventually feel just as fluid and easy as the original game did.
The iPhone version also features new versions of the game from the classic version as well as a timed mode and a challenge mode, both of which are locked, which seems unnecessary.
Still, it’s hard to find any other faults with this game because it stays so true to the original and the original is as close to perfect as a game can get.
Quick Take
Value:You can get an actual arcade stand-up classic for a few bucks
Would I Buy Again:Absolutely, even if it was delivered by some kid on a bike who threw it threw my front window
Learning Curve:The controls feel different but are eventually easy to handle
Who Is It For:Aspiring fish wrap throwers who lament the decline of the newspaper industry
What I Like:It sounds, looks and feels just like the original arcade game
What I Don't Like:Where is the optional handlebar controller peripheral?
Final Statement:Stop the presses! The original "Paperboy" is back!
