User Rating:Geeks rejoice! Star Wars apps have been on the iPhone before, but never this good. But I’m getting ahead of myself.
When I was a youngun’, there was an arcade game for Star Wars very similar to trench run, in which you were in an X-Wing Fighter trying to go into the Death Star trench to reach the exhaust port on the station and blow it up. The graphics weren’t as good but the concept was the same. It’s only natural that this game is given an update and put on the iPhone, following the "iPhonization" (my word. I own the copyright) of such 80’s video games as Space Ace.
Sadly, I own an iPod Touch 1G and there are some issues with running the application. It’s painfully slow, when it runs at all. My understanding is that it has been optimized for the 2G or later (and certainly for the iPhone).
The game itself is quite fun and the graphics are nothing short of stunning (I expect no less from THQ). By tilting the screen, you control the direction of your X-Wing and try to head towards the trench, blasting TIE Fighters along the way by tapping on the lower right corner of the screen. The TIE Fighters appear as blips in the distance and you have to follow brackets that appear on the screen to get a bead on them.
Whatever you may feel of the Star Wars franchise and the direction it has taken since the first movie, this game celebrates all that was fun in that first tale. Even the price hits the sweet spot. It’s a lot of entertainment for $5.
