Apps based on movies or comic book characters (or, in this case, both) are hit-and-miss at best. Usually, they’re more miss than hit. Certain exceptions apply like the Spider-Man game for iOS. Thor, Son of Asgard, isn’t quite as good as that.

The game is basically a prequel to the movie and sets up some of the relationships in that (no spoilers for those who haven’t seen it yet). Basically, Thor is on a mission and is going around a few of the Nine Realms fighting Trolls and Frost Giants in an effort to solve a mystery the way only a God of Thunder can. That is, with no subtlety whatsoever.

The graphics are excellent. The game play feels kind of redundant. Since Thor isn’t as agile as everyone’s favorite wall-crawler, you can’t exactly have him scale buildings. Also, his enemies are nowhere near as interesting. Still, the game plays better than the Iron Man 2 game which shows that Marvel is learning things will each new iOS game released.

Despite this, the game does have a cohesive and believable plot (in the context of Thor) and does come with nice extras such as unlocking the classic Kirby Thor costume with enough game play. Also, your money buys you a universal app to play on both the iPhone and the iPad.

For what it offers, the price seems a little high. I’d recommend that all but the die-hard Marvel fans wait for the next 99 cent sale. I’m sure it will be after the summer, probably around the DVD release in the fall.

Quick Take

Value:Medium.

Would I Buy Again:Possibly.

Learning Curve:Low.

Who Is It For:Die-hard Marvel Comics completists.

What I Like:Good graphics and motion.

What I Don't Like:Plot isn't as interesting as other Marvel games. Limited capabilities of the main character.

Final Statement:Forsooth! If thou doth liked the movie thou shalt like Thor, Son of Asgard.
