So who remembers the Voltron cartoon from the 80’s?  I certainly do.

The game was released in celebration of the franchise’s 25th anniversary.  The game is fairly standard although violent for a cartoon game (the mechanical lions get to trample people).  But then, that’s more a reflection of the relative differences of Japanese cartoons to American ones.

The game is told within a story in which King Zarkon has threatened the planet Arus yet again. In the story mode the user plays each of the Lions in an attempt to perform certain tasks.  After completing each task, new characters which can be played become available.  Eventually, the Lions merge to form Voltron and fight various Robeasts.

After you unlock each Robeast in the story mode, you can play with them in the separate Robeast Arena mode. You can be the Cyclops, Elephant, Zarkon, Yurak, Giant Tree and of course Voltron.  Any of the Robeast characters can be challenged to battle in the Arena against you, and there is no end to that mode of play, so you could be stuck in the Arena all day if you like.

The graphics are somewhat simplistic and harkens back to the games from the early Nintendo systems (although since this is an 80’s franchise, it fits into the theme).  There are even clips from the 80’s cartoon show embedded in the game ("Form Blazing Sword!").   High scores can be posted on Facebook.  My only complaint to this game is that it’s missing my favorite feature in which one can play their audio library in the background.

Admittedly, the game is fun to play and is a good time-waster, particularly for Voltron fans.  For the reduced price (currently .99), it’s worth the download.
