It doesn’t seem to matter how many puzzle games come out for the iPhone, we never get tired of having more. Either we thoroughly complete a game, or (more likely) we become bogged down until we give up. We still seek out new challenges, and today we look at another puzzle game for the iOS called SquareScape.

SquareScape is an intertia maze game where you must continue moving in the direction you started until something stops you. I remember playing several shareware games like this on my Mac growing up, but there seem to be few of them on the iOS. The premise is simple: move your square to the dot and then to the exit without hitting any of the X’s. When you move in a direction you will continue to slide in that direction until you either hit a wall or a brake tile stops you. A secondary goal is to try and accomplish this in the fewest moves possible.

The controls are as easy as they get. You swipe to send your square flying. Beating a level sends you immediately to the next and failing a missing brings you back to the beginning of the level. There are no intermediate menus or load screens. The main screen is based of the game levels themselves with you swiping to reach screens for sounds options and a stat page that keeps track of all your moves. The main screen lets you select a level to play from the ones you have completed. Unfortunately there is no way to view moves from a individual level and there is also no way to know if the number of moves you took is above or below average ( I like to think I am above average).

Games like this remind me of the many shareware games from single developers that would fill up my hard drive on my old Mac. There is a focus and simplicity that I really enjoy. This isn’t the mega monolith of a game that you will find from a big name studio , and that is just fine. There isn’t any GameCenter integration either, but if you like puzzle games then I would urge you to give this one a try. For $.99 this is a solid game that offers many hours of fun and challenge.
