User Rating:I love playing the guitar and love true guitar apps. By true guitar apps I mean apps that can that can be utilized by guitarists. There are many apps available that let you make believe you are a guitarist. I have never had any use for these apps.
When I first opened Star Guitar I was expecting one of those make believe guitar player apps. Surprisingly, this app proved to be different.
Basically this is a guitar synthesizer with real music theory applied. With screen clicks the user is able to pick strum patterns, picking patterns, and change chords. If you work at it you can put the chord changes together and record your song. With the use of a microphone you can also record your voice. With a little practice you are able to create a complete song. This reminds me of the Ocarina app in that it is a nice simulation of the instrument.
The interface allows you to play 144 different chords on the fly without ever changing screens. If you know music theory and chord building you will be able to easily create virtually any chord. Along with the chord options there are also 20 different guitar rhythm patterns as well as three guitar effects. One thing that sets this app apart is the ability to record both the guitar patterns as well as your voice. I never experienced any latency which really surprised me even though you can record simultaneously. The app includes .WAV support, built in Wi-Fi server, and also can export to Intua Beatmaker. There are also advance options that allow the user to load custom loops and expand the guitar models.
This app requires some learning to be able to really create a nice piece of music. With that said, it is easy and fun to just pick up and get chord changes down to play a song to sing along with or experiment with while writing a song. I like how the app is so simple to pick up and play, yet contains very advanced options which make it great for all users. My time with the app was limited so I was able to play some songs and try out all of the strum patterns and picking patterns. Star Guitar is very fast and reacts to your changes instantly. The user experience is very pleasing. This is an app I will definitely spend some time learning to use the advanced options. It is especially great when a guitar is not avialable and I want to experiment with some chord changes or figure out what chords go with a melody. Very nicely done!
