Contest Apps Now Approved?

A year ago I wrote a slot machine app that paid out free copies of applications. App publishers would give away copies of their apps via my app because it’d expose their apps to potential customers. The odds, if I recall correctly, were such that their app and a tagline would show up 2500 or so times before someone won the app.

Apple rejected the app on the grounds that contest/give-away apps were not allowed. Needless to say this wasn’t explicitly verboten in the App Store agreements; it fell under Apple’s blanket we can decide to reject an app for any reason jurisdiction.

A couple of days ago Joel Comm sent us a note to tell us that, according to him, Apple’s changed this policy. He points to KaChing Button app as evidence.

So Dan, I take it you’re resubmitting your app? With the widely-scoped app-recommendation/sharing apps like Chorus and Chomp gaining popularity, I would imagine your app could spread just as quickly.

Good luck actually getting a policy or a straight answer out of Apple on things like this.. 🙂
