It’s unbelievable how much fun you can have with a game that costs you absolutely nothing (for a limited time only). Why pay big developers like EA $5 – $10 for poor re-hashes of hit games like FIFA and The Sims when you can play a brilliant port of Trials Xtreme 2 for free?

Trials 2 is the sequel to the physics-based stunt biker game. In it, you must guide a ragdoll biker through increasingly challenging obstacle courses. If your biker’s head makes contact with either a ceiling, the ground, or cracks head-on into a wall, he slumps off the bike like a limp fish and you must restart the level.

The tricky physics-based gameplay essentially involves going forwards, jumping and the ever-crucial tilting. Personally, I found using the accelerometer to tilt a bit awkward, so switched to using on-screen arrows to tilt. Each to their own though, and the dev’s did well to give players a choice.

As you become increasingly proficient at the not-so-easy-to-learn and tough-to-master gameplay, you’ll find yourself going through the courses quicker and quicker, and clenching your teeth as you attempt to beat your high score.

Trials features Game Center support so you can see how good (or crap, in my case) are compared to all the other Evil Knievel wannabes out there. The gameplay – which was tricky enough on the Xbox version – was always a worry for me with this iPhone port, but the dev’s did brilliantly in adapting it to the small screen. It’s free, so get it. And if you read this months or years down the line when it’s no longer free, then get it anyway.

Quick Take

Value:High - whether you pay for it or not

Would I Buy Again:Yes.

Learning Curve:Medium.

Who Is It For:Anyone up for satisfying, challenging gameplay.

What I Like:Watching your biker fly off the bike always somehow amuses me.

What I Don't Like:Not enough game modes, maybe?

Final Statement:The ultra-popular stunt biker is right at home on the iPhone.
