Astraware’s Hellfire – First Look

By

On

Astraware Is really a role when it comes to iPod and iPod Touch games. We have promo codes available in the Developer’s Corner for five of their other games (last chance to enter since we’ll be giving them away by 4pm est) and their latest, Hellfire is, in my opinion, their best yet!

Hellfire  takes one of my favorite early iPhone games, Chopper up about 25 notches.

The game concept is the same — fly your helicopter, attack the enemy, pick up hostages once they are released, and bring said hostages back to safety. But while the concept is the same, the gameplay is entirely different.

The graphics are incredibly rich. The sound is good and truly adds to the game. The control of the helicopter is smooth — you can increase or decrease altitude, speed, and more. It makes superb use of both accelerometer and the touchscreen controls.

Best yet, the gameplay itself is incredibly detailed. You have your choice of munitions and a varied quantity of each. You can choose whether or not you’re playing as a United States or Soviet helicopter. And there are 16 different missions to complete. I also love the fact that when you come back to the game after a hiatus it picks up at the same level.

I have been playing the game since I first got it yesterday and I’m really enjoying.

I’ll be offering a full review soon but, in the meantime, you can check out a video clip of the game after the break.

Top Paid App Gets Pulled Off App Store

By

On

Yup, the top paid app just got pulled, but it is not what you think.

iShoot, currently the number one paid app in iTunes, is alive and well but, sadly, another paid app hasn’t fared so well.

First, a preamble. Some of you may already be aware that I write all the way from the Asian archipelago known as the Philippines. Being an iPhone enthusiast based outside the "US and A," more often than not I would find myself stuck in a rut. Given my situation, it was particularly difficult to deal with the iTunes Store. First, the Philippine iTunes Store comprises the App Store, the App Store, and the App Store. That’s right. No music, no movies, no podcasts. Just apps. So if you don’t possess an iPhone or an iPod Touch, our local iTunes Store is definitely not the place to shop. Then there’s the issue of promo code redemption. Promo codes can only be used with US iTunes accounts in the US iTunes Store, so it’s no wonder a ‘Redeem’ link is nowhere to be seen in the Philippine version of the store. Lucky for me though, I am within reach of a US-funded account and I was able to create a US iTunes account. Never mind that the Pandora Radio app is practically useless where I’m at due to some license restrictions. I am now able to purchase music, download podcasts and redeem codes for apps that I review on WOiP from the US iTunes Store. Happy times indeed. But every now and then I would find myself checking back on our local store, if only to see what my neighbors are currently into.

New In The App Store – Kings Corners Free

By

On

I’ve totally taken to Ilium Software’s Kings Corners. After playing for more than a week I’m no better at the game but I am still enjoying it as much as ever. That’s saying a lot since I tend to lose interest in most iPhone games pretty quickly.
If you want to try the game but don’t feel like dropping a few bucks on it you are in luck. New tonight is a free version of the game. Is it a stripped down, time-limited version of the paid app? Nope! The only difference is that one ad appears at load time. It is a small price to pay for the privilege of wasting hours and hours playing.

(sorry, no link when posting from my iPhone but a quick search of the App Store will pull it up quickly.)
