iSpeedReader – Review

By

On May 28, 2009

When I was in fourth or fifth grade school offered me a rather unusual course once a week. For an hour at a time I would sit in front of the small machine with a screen and it would display some sort of text, a story or news article either word by word or sentence by sentence. After seeing the entire piece I would be asked a series of questions about what I just read. The key was that over time the speed with which the words or sentences were displayed was increased and as it did my ability to comprehend text more and more rapidly grew. The result of that course was that I’m now able to read very quickly with relatively high comprehension of what I’ve read. It came in handy in school and means that, when on vacation, I go through at least a book a day.

This application takes that same concept and puts it on the iPhone.

Amplitude – Review

By

On April 25, 2009

From The Developer:

Amplitude enhances aural experiences by allowing you to hear distant and/or quiet sounds as if you were standing nearby.  Amplitude uses the high quality hardware of the iPhone and iPod Touch* to detect and amplify the faintest of sounds.  You’ll hear things you never would have been able to hear otherwise.

Using Amplitude is easy: simply launch the app, point your device in the direction of the sound you want to amplify, and starting hearing the world in a new way through your headphones.

Use Amplitude to explore your world.  Experience all the sounds of your environment that you would otherwise have missed.

Send us feedback and feature requests. We want to hear how you are using Amplitude.  Send us your stories or YouTube videos to [email protected].

Update – Remote Tap

By

On April 15, 2009

There are a number of excellent apps that let you use your iPhone or iPod touch as a mouse. One of the best is Remote Tap. It not only allows you to use the iPhone as a mouse but it offers full remote
management of a connected Mac.

In fact, it makes it super easy to see which apps are running, which are in the dock or which are simple accessible from the applications folder. It is continually updated and with each update is faster, easier to use and more feature-rich.

The most recent update was sent to Apple on April 6th and finally went live tonight. This update adds some killer features to an already great app. Among them…

-The app now turns you iPhone into an easy to use Front Row remote. (Ah yes, the final nail in the white remote’s plastic coffin)

-You can now control and select the various Spaces (assuming you use this Leopard feature.)

– If you use multiple displays you can see their arrangement and select them.

Of all the new features the nearest one is the Front Row support which visually replicates the familiar remote in either landscape or portrait.

Read It Later Pro – Review

By

On April 14, 2009

Developers Notes:

Read It Later lets you save pages to read later, even without an Internet connection.

When you come across an article or a website you’d like to read but can’t at that time, save it to your Read it Later list. You can then read it whenever you have a moment, on the couch, in your commute, on the plane, train, or practically anywhere. This allows you to eliminate the cluttering of bookmarks and inboxes with links that are merely of a one-time interest. It’s like a staging area for bookmarks.

The app is a part of the Read It Later service, used by over a million users. Read It Later can integrate with every major web browser and even has a robust Firefox extension. All of your browsers and devices are tied to a single sync account which means you can save an article from work or home and read it on your phone.

Key Features:
– Offline Reading: View complete websites even without an internet connection.
– Sync: Use the same list between all of your computers and devices
– Text-only View: Easy to read mode strips formatting and images
– Sorting: Sort your list by date, title, and site
– Searching: Filter your list by title, site, and tags
– Saved Positions: Remembers where you left off on every article

Pro Features:
– Tap to Save Bookmarklet: Lightning fast batching of links directly from mobile safari. Works great on sites like Google Reader, Digg, CNN, or any news portal.
– Fullscreen Reader: Expands the reader to the full edges of the screen
– Share: Share pages from your list on major bookmarking services/social networks. Works with Twitter, Digg, Facebook, StumbleUpon and a lot more
– Automark as Read: Allow marking pages as read as you read them
– Rotation Settings: Allows you to disable auto-rotation and set landscape or portrait viewing
– Unread Count: Shows the number of items in your list from your home screen.

ConnectDots – Review

By

On April 12, 2009

When Julia Turner at Think Graphics asked me to review the ConnectDots app for the iPhone and iPod Touch I quickly downloaded it and went straight to work. I did not find directions or guidance when I opened the app but was immediately presented with16 black and white outlines- think coloring book pages. I selected one and started to connect the dots with my fingers. I realized my actions were not mirrored by the program. The lines were drawn with just my touch to the picture, much easier for little fingers, but a bit disappointing to me (can you say perfectionist). Once all lines were complete the green dots disappear and it was time to create my first masterpiece. I could hardly wait!

Scoche reviveLITE – Review

By

On February 25, 2009

Here is a great little accessory for your iPod or iPod Touch — and one that I’m getting a tremendous amount of use from.

The reviveLITE from Scoche  allows you to charge your iPhone or iPod Touch without the hassle carrying the cable and wall charger. It has the added benefit of including a night light that can be used to gently illuminate a corner of a room on the dark nights.

The unit itself looks like a small rectangular plastic box. Since it has no portruding pieces it can get tossed into a gadget bag without a thought.

Hidden in the low profile unit, however, is a wall plug and a flip-down iPod charging adapter. The included foam inserts secure various iPod and iPhone models to the unit and the whole thing meets Energy Star performance standards.

No, the unit won’t sync your iPod or iPhone but it is a super convenient way to carry a charger with you.

The unit comes in "arctic white" or "java black" and retails for $39.99. Considering a usb wall plug for the iPhone 3G retails for $29.00 the price seems reasonable. It is available directly from Scosche.

AudioEngine 2 (A2) Premium Powered Desktop Speakers – Review

By

On February 19, 2009

Over the past few weeks we’ve had a chance to get to know AudioEngine’s products and have, in the process, become huge fans!

This week we get to look at yet another product in their line- the Audioengine 2 (A2) Premium Powered Desktop Speakers- and, once again, are appropriately impressed.

Dimitri loved the big sound and excellent build on the high-end A5s. At about 1/3 the size of the A5s, the A2s are like the smaller sibling and while they don’t pack the SAME punch, they hold their own rather well.

Let’s take a look…
